How It Works
First, you do not need to buy extra hardware or discs. Online backup starts with a piece of software that you download and install on your computer. Once installed, the backup software continuously watches for new files or changes to existing ones. The software then copies, encrypts, and transfers the data to remote servers where the copied files are stored (protecting them from theft, fires, hard drive failure, etc). The original files remain on your computer. If the original file gets damaged by a virus, or is accidentally overwritten, you can download the copy from the remote server.
Some back up vendors only back up these new or changed files once or twice per day. Carbonite’s solution backs files up in near real time so you’re data is almost instantaneously protected.
