Compared to External Hard Drives

An external hard drive is a physical piece of hardware that connects to your computer—it takes up space in your work area. Backing up to an external hard drive requires a local connection between the external hard drive and your desktop or laptop. That works pretty well when you are at home, and maybe at the office, but about when you travel?

Also, like any piece of hardware, an external hard drive can be physically damaged, leaving your personal data inaccessible. Installing an external hard drive can also prove tricky, and, as with any computer peripheral, it comes with challenges and risks.

Who wants to spend hours seeking answers from outdated FAQs from external hard drive manufacturer Web sites?
Don’t get stuck posting questions like these:

“My computer suddenly stopped recognizing my external hard drive. It’s now listed as an unknown device and the data is not readable. Is there any way to predict an external hard drive failure?”
“I bought a new external hard drive and the health indicator shows 70% health. Should I replace the drive?”
